Proposed 2009 Triathlon Rule Changes

I'm working on a proposal for Ironman (WTC) and USAT rules changes for 2009. You already know that I am a Category 1 ref for WTC and Cat. 3 for USAT and ITU.

WTC
1) Speed suits should be out.
2) Penalties: a) Ironman Distance - sync the penalties with USAT - 1st penalty = 6 minutes 2nd = 12 minutes (total of 18 minutes) b) 70.3 Distance - sync penalties with USAT - 4 minutes for 1st penalty, 8 minutes for the 2nd = 12 minutes. Yellow card penalties stay the same - stop and go. c) Marshal the run course for pacers and issue similar penalties on the run course. d) DQ for phones/radios.
3) Racers with a debilitating disease (like ALS) would race in the physically challenged division.
4) Groups/packs would be issued a card and pulled over as a whole.
5) ALL racers will be required to swim on a given side of the swim buoy. Time penalty (as on the bike or run) applies.

USAT
1) Speed suits should be out.
2) Groups/packs would be penalized all together.
3) All racers will be required to swim on a given side of the swim buoy. Time penalty (as on the bike or run) applies.

Your feedback? Suggestions?

  1. I like your proposals. One suggestion would be to increase marshalls as well. Is it just funding the reason why they won't?

  2. I too like the changes. There is way too much drafting going at these races...especially the 70.3's.

I'm split between the speed suit proposed change. Technology is what it is. Plus I need all the help I can get in the swim. :)
